Keeping up with Khloe
Written by Beth Torre

Khloe Kardashian with no paparazzi on her heels? ~ It was an unexpected sight, seeing the curvaceous Kardashian sister walk into the restaurant she had selected for our interview without any cameras aimed at her from every corner. ~ She has mapped out certain areas in Los Angeles and knows where she can go without being pounced on by the media. “I love it here,” she says of the restaurant, a favorite low-key haunt of hers and her family. “[This place] has been around forever. There’s one in Beverly Hills that we’ve been going to since I was a kid.”

Here was a place she could still go and enjoy a meal without enduring ogling patrons; awkward, star struck staff; or the frenzy of camera clicks and flashes. Despite her notoriety, this Kardashian still prefers a low-key lifestyle. She falls into conversation easily. T here is an energy about her that is refreshing and likeable; she is poised and very much at ease, yet despite her youth, she invokes the impression that one is speaking with someone older than her 26 years. “I’ve always been considered an old soul,” she confides. “Since I was a child … I’ve always had adult responsibilities.

“My parents are very structured; my father and my stepdad are very structured people.” Her father is the late Robert Kardashian, best known for his trial defense of O.J. Simpson. Kardashian and Khloe’s mother, Kris, divorced in 1989 after three daughters and a son together. Kris later remarried, to Olympian and motivational speaker Bruce Jenner.

As a child, Khloe’s adult role models were always on the go, forging hard-earned careers. Not surprisingly, her sense of ambition and drive is well-honed. She has been working since she was 16—first in her father’s practice, and then at D-A-S-H, the women’s designer-clothing store she opened in Calabasas with her sisters seven years ago.

“I worked there with no employees for three years. I didn’t have one helper,” she confides. “I was the salesperson, the buyer, the housekeeper, everything. It was like my baby; I didn’t want employees—I wanted it all to myself.”

However, when job offers started pouring in from other areas, she could no longer continue running the store on her own. She and her sisters hired a sales team and a store manager. Khloe and her sisters have since opened another location in Miami, and most recently, the full Kardashian/Jenner/ Odom clan has launched a celebrity-lifestyle boutique at the MGM Mirage in Las Vegas called Kardashian Khaos. Although they are not physically present in the stores, the three sisters are involved in the intricacies of the business, including acting as buyers for the stores and reviewing daily sales reports.

“Every single day we know everything that sells in [the] stores. We get lists emailed to us every night. We know everything that’s sold, we know the sales each employee made … and then we find out what’s not selling, what we should buy more of, what we should never buy again,” Khloe explains. In addition to running the stores the trio of sisters designs fashion for Bebe and other signature lines, endorses PerfectSkin and QuickTrim and, of course, takes part in Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami. Khloe’s schedule includes frequent traveling, and she makes a point of getting in a good workout each day as well. How does she do it? “I don’t sleep a lot; I don’t need a lot of sleep,” she confesses. In fact, it’s not unusual for her to be up at 5:00 a.m. to run off to a photo shoot.

When she does get a reprieve, she is most likely to spend it at home, just relaxing and enjoying quality time with her husband of one year, Lakers forward Lamar Odom. “We don’t get a lot of days off, so we’re just going to hang in the house all day and you know, be bum-my,” she says of the rare moments they are home together.
